Good Night and Good Luck...responce

The movie Good Night and Good Luck... was an interesting movie to watch. Though it was in black and white something I am not use to it kept my attention, for longer than I expected. It was interesting to see how television was received when it first was introduced to the world. I could only imagine how people saw this box that showed pictures, and to my surprise I was correct. Today most people own at least one television. My family is not exception there is actually one television in every room in my house. Television is important to me it’s one of the first of many electronic devices that I turn on every morning. Sometimes I feel like I can’t wake up unless the TV is on, well there are several other factors that can override that feeling but baring that TV is important. Also I was able to see in the movie some of the most outstanding piece of reporting I have ever seen in my life. This was done by Edward R. Murrow and CBS news; he took on a Mayor who labeled his “enemies” as communist and had them charged with treason. Murrow used his own words on a live interview to prove to the Mayor that he was wrong. In an interesting twist Murrow did not like television he thought it would “brain wash” the American citizens into well a potato. To boot his original reporting was done on the radio. To some up the movie was a joy to see and I would love to see it again.

Annie Lee Moss was born August 9, 1905 and died January 15, 1996) was a communications clerk in the US Army Signal Corps in the Pentagon and alleged member of the American Communist Party. She was believed to be a security risk by the FBI and her superiors at the US Army Signal Corps and was questioned by United States Senator Joseph McCarthy in his role as the chairman of the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations. The highly publicized case was damaging to McCarthy's popularity and influence.

" WE CAN NOT BE MOVED" OCCUPIEED WALL STREET

The movement called occupied wall street has took to the streets after being taking out of their home in Wall street, they have split into groups. The first group is right now at Wall street taking back their home meanwhile the second group is in the MTA subway system in all the major stations. Such as Jamaica/ Parsons Blvd. in queens where I live. I think this is a message to the world that this is a major movement and " we can not be moved"

Chapter 6 review

The growth of America has caused many aspects of the economy to grow. As this happens journalism also has grown as well. During this time there were a lot of powerful people who take advantage of this new growth, to make more money in this growing time.  Much like today there is always someone wanting to make more money, and with this greed come journalism. This injustice will be exposed through the opinions and facts of journalist. In the second half the 19th century there has been times when big business will take advantage of things for example the Standard Oil Company that made an illegal deal with Rockefeller Corporation. This was exposed by a journalist named S.S McClure he uncovered how Rockefeller would give Standard Oil special transport and lower rates to ship. This made it hard for other oil companies to keep up. This was called muckraking I understand the term it was to rack up the muck that big business create. This even happens today with the Leman Brothers and how they embezzled millions of dollars and crashed their company, when they did crash they took the jobs to thousands of employees. Then proceeded to borrow tax money from the government to pay debts that the company owes, then shortly after the CEO of the company revived millions of dollars in a “bonus” but no one can explain why. Soon the muckraking began by local journalist to seek the truth. Soon after the CEO was forced to step down and from there another took over. Much like the past and today journalism kept power to the people and also to keep other small business alive.

Class trip to Occupied Wall Street

Occupied Wall Street has improved since the last I have been there. They have become more than just a group of people; they grew into a self-made city. I was impressed by who much it has evolved into what it is today. From the outside it looks like a bunch of people living in tents, and sleeping bags. This changes when you take a closer look, they have made a medical ten with substantial medical supplies and medical staff also a make shift kitchen. With a full kitchen staff to care for the hundreds of people that is the Occupied Wall Street. Walking through the camp is another story the smell of questionable substances linger in the air, mixed with the smell of well humans who have not taken a bath in a few months it’s hard to tolerate. The people have changed as well the person I spoke to named “Balance” he is “34” years of age, the reason why he is there is to make a difference, he claims that “ Occupied Wall Street is ground zero where things happen” he traveled from the west end to New York to be part of it. Though as vague as he was he seemed to be friendly, and glad to talk to anyone it’s refreshing to talk to a friendly person or it could be the questionable substances he is possibly on. I had a question to ask him and it was not on the list it was how you will deal with the upcoming winter? His response was he has plenty of military equipment from when he was in the U.S Army, so at least from him that should keep him warm and a cup of coffee won’t hurt.

Come one, come all, bring the kids too...Occupied Wall Street is now a family event

In a recent report by Fox Occupied Wall Street, has now become a family event. Reporters have seen an incline of children as young as 1 year old. In response to this the members of Occupied Wall Street has made Zuccotti Park more kid friendly, with tents and clowns to entertain the children. This incline is due to the incline of single mothers with children who support Occupied Wall Street and its cause. Being a single mom is hard enough but in the times we live in it makes it all the more difficult for one to raise a child.

Chapter 5 responce

As America moves into global expansion in the hopes of becoming a global power, journalism follows suet. The Spanish -American War was one of the least noted of the many wars that was waged but it had an effect on the people, well to me it sparked an idea to use the voice that journalism has to lead people like sheep. Journalism’s voice is meant for the people but that voice can just as easily be used to lead them astray. In order for America to expand it needed its people to support it, and journalism was used as its way to do this. The drawing by Frederic Remington of women being forced to submit to strip searches, this simple picture and a few other indents like the sinking of the U.S.S Maine by a suppose Spanish mine and the $50,000 for the person responsible for the sinking. With the outraged public the United States government responded the only way they knew and wanted to respond with war. The saying “history repeats itself” was right September 11th 2001 was the most recent even that kind of tactic was used. With the pain of millions Americans calling for the heads of who, caused this event the government was given a “blank check” by the people this came about by posting in several papers what I like to call “who done it” posting. Eventually the Iraq war sparked and still to this day we still are fighting the war eight years later.

Article response: Rallies Sweep the Globe Protest Ecomic Polices

Occupy Wall Street encampment in Manhattan has become a major moment across the globe. This is because all over the world there is always the “little guy” being bullied by the “big bully” and it’s about time that the “little guy” stood up. This new revelation started out very small then blew up in different places for example “In Rome on Saturday, a rally thick with tension spread over several miles” then in “ Chicago, about 175 people were arrested at about 1 a.m. on Sunday after refusing to leave Grant Park before the 11 p.m. closing time”. Though they are met with conflict by the police or other authorities of similar power, they still stayed strong and fought back. In New York they were locked in a bank lobby, the reason for this was to help control the crowds, in my opinion you don’t lock people hundreds of angry people in a small space; for the same reason you don’t lock and angry tiger in a cage and stick your head in its mouth. It won’t turn out well, this only came to create an problem like it did for one lady named Sandi Bernard “who is 59 and was visiting from Waldorf, Md. while wondering if she would have trouble making the 8 p.m. curtain call for “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark.” I am still wondering how this turn out will and what will this lead to? My hope is that Occupy Wall Street will change the way business deal with people and finally bring some respect to the middle class and the lower class.

Chapter 2 of Mightier than the Sword response

Slavery was the main reason why the civil war was fought; it was the north who wanted slavery to be abolished and the south wanted slaves for cheap labor so they can make a profit off of their crops. Like many wars to come people had their opinions about it journalism was their voice and “The Liberator” it was written by both white and black journalist alike. The most important people were Rev.Elijah P. Love Joy he was a Journalistic Martyr and William Lloyd Garrison and he was radical abolitionist editor. The Liberator was mainly a paper that was printed as a way to help abolish slavery. Even on the nameplate it showed African –Americans being traded and sold on the auction block like horses and cattle. This paper gave even African-Americans a chance to publish their work, even though the first black news paper was published in the north and its main goal was to again abolish slavery. It was called the “Freedom’s Journal” and it was first published in New York City in 1827. The efforts of the abolish movement responded to the civil war and the civil war was a response to economic growth. The economic growth was a response to the two half’s of the United States developing in two different ways, the north moved into an industrial stage while the south stayed the same well mostly. This created so many problems for many people but intern it opened doors for many people to change the world with news and journalism.

Chapter 4 in Elements of Journalism response

Chapter 4 reminded  me of a movie I had seen  a few years back called “Shattered Glass” it was about a reporter named Stephen Glass he was born 1972 and he was an American and a former journalist, known best for serial fraud in his articles. Over a three-year period as a young rising star at The New Republic from 1995 to 1998, he fabricated quotations, sources, and even entire events in articles he wrote for that magazine and others. He was fired when his deceptions came to light. This chapter basically spoke about he did wrong, and how he broke all the rules that journalist follow don’t fabricate stories or facts, don’t deceive the audience, be transparent as possible about your methods and motives, rely on your own original reporting, and exercise humility. This in my opinion is a bad journalism what Stephen Glass did but again he added things to stories that did not happen or he completely made up a story. This leads to the second point in chapter 4 do not deceive the public counts on the news to know what is happening around them, sometimes around the world what if we were under attack by another country we would not know until missile blows up half the country. Transparency to me is the most important thing to posses when you write. If people can’t understand what you write, it won’t matter if it is true or false. Transparency can mean the difference between a really good story and a bad one; sometimes it makes a bad story good. It can help get the “message” across to the reader how this is done is up the reporter.

700 aressted on protest

The lead that I picked up from a protester came true, but the choice to not cover was a good one. Seven hundred people were arrested, when they attempted to cross the Brooklyn Bridge to protest. I wonder if Trevor went to protest and I hope he is ok. Knowing what happed and it is easy to read about it and feel sorry for all those people who got arrested, but it is a different story when you talked to one of them and see the human in at least one of them. It makes you think it makes you feel what they feel that they are protesting because something is wrong, someone is doing something wrong to make “normal” humans band together for a cause.
It’s a different point of view when a human element is added to the equation. It’s bad that the police had to arrest seven hundred and eighty people nearly one thousand hard working Americans. Over something that millions of Americans face every day, why are Wall Street messing things up? Why are gas prices going up? Why are things they way they are? Why are people who we trust to stabilize our economy doing such as bad job? These people asked themselves those questions, and decided to do something about it. But in the end it ended it people get arrested, and almost nothing gets done.

New York Protest response, interview with protester

My visit to Manhattan to cover the protest, it was filled with challenges. It was not on the New York Times so I went to Manhattan heading to the route of the Financial District. Along the way I saw the crowd increase, and I end up in Zuccotti Park on Liberty Avenue. There I saw lots of different people from all walks of life, from the single mothers to the stock worker who got laid off. All in protest all united for one cause. I also saw that there were sleeping bags, old mattresses and thousands of blanks ready to sleep in the park. I was happy when I beat several journalists to a good story. CNN came with a hug truck but did not set up as yet; I even beat the student news paper from Harvard University. There were hundreds of police officers ready to control if things got out of hand.

This protest drew a lot of attention from the average New Yorkers to a lot of visitors. Several of the tour bus passed and slowed down to show the visitors what was going on. Before I knew it there was thousands more people started to show up, even more journalist began to show up to cover the news. I did manage to talk to a protestor named Trevor Roulstin age 25; he is a married man with two kids whose names I did not want to ask for. But I asked him one question what is the reason for all of this? His first response was “I can’t speak for everyone” so I said what made you do all this. He is here because he is tired of giving away one pay check to live in his house, and the other goes to food. He is also he is tired of Wall Street not caring of people with no money or not caring at all. Also I over heard from another protester that there will be a huge walk tomorrow.

New York Times responce “Amorous Squids Seeks Partner: Any Sex Will Do”

The article “Amorous Squids Seeks Partner: Any Sex Will Do” in the New York Times is about the Octopoteuthis Deletron squid. Not much is known about this type of squid except it lives thousands of feet below the water where there is hardly any life or any life. Scientist have discovered that their lifestyle is one filled with solitude and the squid can’t tell the difference between a male or a female, due to this mistake they tend to mate with the same sex equally as they will with the opposite sex.
How they mate is the male ejaculates a packet of sperm at the mating partner, and the packet turn inside out and the sperm sticks to the mate’s flesh. Then the female would fertilize them when she is ready. This ritual can be done to earthier a male or female. Sciences also have discovered these sperm cells on males as well as females. Some blame their lonely lifestyle with no contact with other Octopoteuthis Deletron squid when another squid comes along, they don’t take the chance that it may or may not be the opposite sex they mate and then leave.
I believe this theory because a lonely life can be hard on anyone even animals, lonely is lonely and if you get a chance to not be alone even if it is with another of your same gender. This can be exemplified in humans as well when subjected to similar conditions. This does not mean that the squid is “gay” it should be understood as “lonely squid”.

Article responce: Opening Shot

This event, the resignation of Hosni Mubarak gave the boost that the media in Egypt and other Arab country needed. Also the news of Mubarak spread all over the world including the United States. Most of the Egyptians that live in New York gathered in Time Square to protest and the coverage spread back to Egypt. The citizens that want Mubarak to step down found great use for the protests that the media has covered. The media across the country of Egypt and around it was influenced by this cause, for the first time the media was the voice of the people not the government or what religion dictates. This action even made it to the White House was President Obama made a speech asking, Hosni Mubarak to step down and be replaced by the person what the people want. This prompted him to step down.
The media was finally used in a democratic manner to remove a corrupt power to someone the people wanted. This shows me the power that media has and what the media can do, it is able to even change an entire country for better or for worse. The news not matter if it is radio, television, or in a paper it has the power to let people know what is going on. Even if it is not around them even across the world but it may affect anyone, this proves to me information is important no matter what it is.

Chapter 1 response

Chapter one was a very interesting chapter. Now I know how journalism started in Poland as a way to rebel against the government. It shows the power the people has over the government; it puts in the term there is power in numbers. Including the modern times with emailing and computers if a person feel offended by the news or a certain reporter they can call or email the news reporter and voice their opinion. With modern times the news in my opinion has more power due to the advantages of the 21st century. They have numbers that the average Joe can call in and suggest news stories, from things that happen in their neighborhood or in their daily lives that may affect others.

what i want to learn in this calss

What i would like to learn in this class, is to improve my writing skills. So i am able to craft a better papers  for this class and others to come. Also i would like to get a better understanding on how information gets to my tv, the radio in my SUV, and all places where i get my news. How this links to the class reading the article made by Baryn Pitts it showed me the will and bravery it takes to get information, to the public even on 9/11.

Hello

Hi, my name is Justyn
